Out of Office: Christina and Adam, Our Sweet Adventures
Our Out of Office weekly feature profiles brave souls who have taken the plunge in balancing both a career in a 9-6 full time as well as pursuing a fulfilling travel lifestyle.
Christina is from Dallas, Texas, while Adam is from St. Louis, Missouri. We met in Las Vegas through our jobs. Christina was in the food and beverage division while Adam was in the hotel operations division - together we make a hospitality power couple! When we are not busy working you can always find us at a restaurant, bakery or traveling somewhere new. We love to travel and we love to eat! Our website is a sweet blend of both.
1. Where do you work and what’s your role?
Adam is a front desk manager at a luxury hotel and Christina is a Master Pastry Cook at the same hotel. We really enjoy working under the same roof.
A daily week for us looks like:
Adam takes Christina to work (5 minute drive) at 9am and then goes back home. Then at 3pm he takes himself to work. Christina will leave work at 5:30pm and work on our website and then at 10pm she drives back to the hotel to pick up Adam so he has the car to drive home from work at 2-3am.
It is a little crazy, but it works for us. Then we have Wednesday and Thursday to explore our city, Washington D.C. or take a two day trip somewhere new.
2. Tell us something interesting about you people don’t know.
We love to play Call of Duty on Xbox live! Add our gamertag if you want to play with us, Geeg28 ☺
3. How many trips do you take a year for leisure?
This year we are taking one big trip to Africa to celebrate our two year wedding anniversary. We will be visiting South Africa and Zambia for 10 days. We are very excited about it. We picked Africa because it feels different than what everyone is doing/the travel trend. We also picked Africa now because it is our last big trip before we start a family and the rate for children is almost as much as an adult! So we figured let’s go now and take our future children to the zoo!
Since we have one big trip we have a lot of small 2 day trips like Philadelphia, camping in Shenandoah National Park, wedding in Kansas City, sister’s college graduation in St. Louis, cousin’s wedding in Green Bay, and New York City during the holidays. This year is a lot of family and friend events.
One more trip we are trying to plan is Bermuda. If we can get our first sponsored stay we will definitely be going to Bermuda this summer!
4. What’s your most memorable moment on a short trip?
Hiking in Zion National Park is definitely one of our favorite trips. Back when we lived in Las Vegas we worked the night shift and so we went home at midnight, slept for 4 hours and then hit the road to Zion. We hiked some of the best trails, watched a beautiful sunset and slept under the stars. We had a truck and placed an air mattress in the truck bed with blankets and pillows and that was our campsite. It was both beautiful and romantic.
5. Why is travelling important to you?
It is a reminder to see the world. We have grown and learned more about the world and ourselves when we travel. Traveling always changes our lifestyle a little bit and we feel more positive. It also brings us closer together. So all around it is important to us because it is healthy in our mind, body and soul.
6. What’s the one thing you’ve learnt in your job that travelling won’t teach you?
We have learned empathy. To really walk in someone else’s shoes and feel their pain. When they have a bad experience you really need to roll out the red carpet because that is what you would want when you have a bad experience.
7. Conversely, what has travelling taught you that you won’t learn in your job?
We have learned that while traveling you have to be open to different cultures and beliefs. You cannot be closed minded because then nobody will want to talk to you or give you advice.
8. What’s your #1 tip about how to maximise travel out of your hectic schedule?
Always take advantage of your days off. We have done countless of 48 hours, if not less, trips and they have all been worth it! Even if it is two hours away from your home, it is an escape to rejuvenate and enjoy something new. We make it a point to never go more than two months without going somewhere new. And if it is a trip worth three days, then take that extra day off with or without pay. Life is too short to not take advantage of the world we live in.
9. What goal are you hoping to achieve by end 2017?
We hope to have sponsored hotel and restaurant visits and gain enough traffic on our website without the help of Facebook groups.
10. What is your ideal holiday?
At an all-inclusive, luxury resort on the beach with fun excursions to enjoy. We love not having to worry about anything when we are on vacation.
